NADDO's Founding and Vision

In the late 1950s, the art of Double Dutch faced near extinction, overshadowed by the rise of television and radio among the youth. However, in 1973, NYC Police officers Ulysses F. Williams and David Walker revitalized the tradition, using it in their outreach programs with a focus on keeping girls off the streets and away from trouble. By the 1980s, organized Double Dutch teams surged, with over fifteen hundred jumpers in NYC alone.

The birth of the American Double Dutch League (ADDL) marked a turning point, inspiring teams from the US, Canada, and nearby islands to join. McDonald's sponsorship of tournaments, locally and nationally, not only provided crucial financial support but also catapulted Double Dutch into mainstream recognition as a legitimate sport. However, when McDonald's severed ties in the late '90s, it led to the collapse of the network of Double Dutch leagues.

Undeterred, ADDL continued, albeit with struggles. Double Dutch never returned to its street origins, as seen before ADDL's inception. NADDO's founder, Laila Little, played a pivotal role in the sport's history. Her team from New Jersey achieved significant milestones, becoming the first from the state to reach the final round and securing the title of world champions. Witnessing the decline of ADDL, Laila founded the National Association for Double Dutch Orgs (NADDO) in May 2015, originally named IDDL, with a vision to rejuvenate the sport in inner cities and beyond.
